STORING
The shelf life of tea depends significantly on how tea is stored. We generally recommend consuming teas within one year of purchase to ensure that you drink them when they are at their freshest and best. There are five storage conditions that can make a huge difference on how long your tea will last. These factors are light, heat, moisture, odor and air.
Light, UV rays, and heat degrade tea very quickly. Moisture can cause problems as it can activate enzymes that contribute to its decomposition. Tea is shelf stable because it is dry. Unfortunately, it absorbs moisture and odor very easily when exposed to air. Following are the proper ways to store tea to maintain its quality and flavor for many months to come.
- Store tea in a dark cabinet or completely opaque container away from the sunlight and heat sources such as stoves and ovens.
- Store tea far away from anything with a strong odor such as perfume, aromatic food, spice cabinet or trash can.
- Keep delicate teas separate from strongly scented teas.
- Avoid storing tea in humid areas of your house such as above a dishwasher vent.
- Use glazed ceramics, tin, opaque containers, or bags with an inner layer of foil or glassine (a substance similar to wax paper) that can be tightly sealed.
